Democratic Republic of Congo: Cholera outbreak (2017)

In 2017 I documented an unprecedented cholera epidemic which has been affecting 20 out of 26 DRC provinces - among them South Kivu.
MSF emergency team in the region has been responding to the outbreak, setting up cholera treatment centres in towns around the lake Kivu. Communities living around the lake have been experiencing issues with access to clean water, due to the lack of funding for public wells and water treatment stations. The most affected by the outbreak were children and vulnerable families, which lack access to potable water and cannot afford to pay for medical treatment. I spent three weeks in the province and worked alongside local Congolese doctors and medical staff to tell their stories.

How did I become a doctor

You think becoming a doctor is hard? Try to imagine becoming one in a conflict zone, in one of the most dangerous and remote areas of DRC.
Doctor Innocent´s parents were illiterate, but it didn’t stop him from dreaming big. Now he is only 32 but he’s already a doctor and the first Congolese man to lead an MSF emergency team in South Kivu, one of Congo´s most troubled provinces.
